Electronic Trading Revolution

MarketAxess launched two decades ago as the first publicly traded fintech to offer institutions fully electronic trading in bonds, by far the largest asset category in global markets. Their objective was to bring the efficiencies of electronic trading to a vast, complex market that had historically been traded over the counter (OTC) between fund managers and investment banks’ trading desks.

Continuing its strong growth, MarketAxess reported a record number of active client firms in Q2 2023, totaling 2,083, up 30% from 2019. The number of active individual traders rose to nearly 12,000 in the quarter, also a record. This client base includes the leading global asset managers and investment banks.
The total value of bond trades made using MarketAxess’ automated execution technology surged to a record $460 billion in Q3 of 2023, representing a compound annual growth rate of 32% since 2019.
More than 1,400 media placements in the period from 2019-22, leveraging their introduction of innovative trading capabilities, acquisitions and strong growth record. Leading executives have been positioned as thought leaders to address topics such as liquidity challenges in the bond markets, the expansion of electric trading in non-US markets, changes in the structure of the all important Treasury market, and Open Trading in muni bonds.
